POSTED IN For Students, Resources

This post will go through the application in general so that you know what you need to get together in advance, as well as any tips we’ve gathered.  Check out this great page on the CaRMS website for the big headings before you read this article!

The Big Headings (& any tips we could think of!)….

1. Personal Data – pretty straight forward.  Put in a Canadian address so it’s clear you are a CSA vs an IMG.

2. Education – there is a box to type in below your medical degree called “additional information about your studies”.  We suggest filling this in. Topics to include could be how moving to a new country was valuable (vs staying home), how your medical school experiences have shaped your CaRMS choices, etc.

3. Electives – Again for each elective there is a box to type in.  Suggestions of topics include what you did/learned, how it was essential to your future career goals, etc.

4. Residency training – mostly N/A for CSA’s.

5. Work experience – the boxes here can be filled in to show how your previous jobs led you to a medical career, or shaped your match choices, etc.

6. Publications/Presentations – straight forward with no boxes to fill in.

7. Research experience  – fill in the boxes here too!

8. Observerships – fill in the boxes here, including information to make the observerships relevant to your match choices.

9. Volunteer experience – again, there are boxes to fill in for each volunteer activity.  Tie information in with your match choices.

10. Activities/Interests/Awards – a slightly ridiculous section.  They give you longer boxes to fill in for “professional associations/memberships/committees”, “accomplishments/interests”, and “honors/awards”.  The word count is still limited so make sure you get the important points in!

11. Examinations – literally check boxes for exams you have taken and pass/fail boxes.
