1. FREEDOM AND EQUALITY: To remove barriers so that all Canadian international medical graduates, who have passed the national medical examinations, have the right to compete on an equal footing on their merits for the residency positions presently reserved for graduates of Canadian and American medical schools; and
2. SUPPORT: To provide information and support to Canadians studying medicine abroad so they can navigate the current system so that they can try to make it home despite the barriers placed in their path.
(SOCASMA does not promote elimination of an International Medical Graduate Stream for permanent residents and Canadian citizens who were educated and/or trained as physicians in other countries whose cultural and language barriers prevent them from being competitive in the main competition stream.)
